We’re Recruiting: Independent Director (Trustee) – Treasurer

As we continue delivering our 10-year strategy - It All Starts with Play! we are now looking to strengthen our Board through the appointment of an Independent Director (Trustee) – Treasurer.

Who we’re looking for

A person is independent if they are free from any close connection to Play England and would be viewed as independent by an objective outsider. This means we are looking for people primarily from outside the play sector who can bring fresh perspectives, expertise, and constructive challenge.

We are looking for someone with a strong background in finance, accountancy, audit, investment, or financial governance, ideally with senior experience within the charity and/or public sector.

We are particularly interested in candidates with:

  • Formal financial qualifications (for example ACA, ACCA, CIMA) or equivalent senior experience

  • Experience of financial governance, audit, risk, and organisational sustainability

  • An understanding of fundraising, philanthropy, or income diversification

  • The ability to provide strategic oversight and support effective Board decision-making

You do not need to be a play expert. We already have those around the table. We are looking for someone who shares our values and can bring their skills and experience to help Play England thrive.

Why join us?

This is an important role at an exciting time for Play England. With play increasingly recognised within policy, planning and public life, we are seeking someone who can bring strong financial expertise, independent perspective, and constructive challenge to support the next phase of our development.

This is an opportunity to help shape the future of children’s play in England and support delivery of our bold objective - to restore a play-based childhood for all children in England by 2035.

The commitment

  • 4–6 Board meetings per year (mostly online, with at least one in person)

  • Attendance at key events including Playday and the International Day of Play

  • Term: 4 years, renewable once

  • Voluntary role, with reasonable expenses reimbursed

  • Appointment subject to DBS check

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

We want our Board to reflect the children, families, communities and sector we serve. We welcome applications from everyone and especially encourage younger applicants (under 30), disabled people, people from under-represented communities, and people of all genders.

All appointments are made on merit. Reasonable adjustments are available throughout the process.

How to apply

Please send the following to info@playengland.org.uk by midnight, 30 June 2026:

  • Your CV and a covering letter (maximum two pages) explaining why you are interested, and how your skills and experience match what we’re looking for
